Superman Returns (version 2)

Mock opening credits for Superman Returns.

This was an animation project I did for school in 2004. It was meant to be a vision of what the opening credits for Superman Returns might look like, two years before the film was released. This version was completed in November 2005. Some of the credits have been corrected, additional CG stars have been added, and, although my own slightly updated textures are still being used, a newer, better shield model has been supplied by Ajay Naran. Of course the music was composed and conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Everything else was created by yours truly. I was trying to match the design as closely as possible to the opening credits of Superman: The Movie from 1978.

When it was finished, I burned it to DVD with the intention of sending it off to Bryan Singer as a means of expressing my excitement that he was finally bringing Superman back to the big screen. I petitioned for assistance from Justin, the webmaster of BlueTights.net, who was known to have connections with Singer's office, but I received no reply whatsoever.

In 2006, a week or two before Superman Returns premiered, I brought a copy with me to a Superman convention in the aptly named Metropolis, Illinois, just in case anyone there wanted to see it. When I arrived, I got a tip that one of the screenwriters, Mike Dougherty, might be there. Sure enough, I spotted him out of the crowd and managed to meet with him. I told him I had a clip I wanted him to share with Bryan Singer and began describing it. Before I could finish, he stopped me and said "Wait, YOU made that!?" He then explained to me that Bryan had seen the clip on my site and had wanted to use it in a rough cut of his movie, but they were unable to get in contact with me.

So I guess I accomplished my mission, more or less.

Software used: 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, After Effects.
